I think I speak for all of us when I say that language has been one of the biggest frustrations here in East Kalimantan. We want to learn about Borneo from Indonesians, but few of us arrived with even the most basic knowledge of Bahasa. So when we arrived at Samboja Lestari to find that many employees speak English, we were excited to take advantage of the rare opportunity to communicate.

Endangered Primates and the Heart of Borneo

Screeches emanate from the crowns of mangrove trees high above us and we watch, hesitant to even breathe, as big-nosed, pot-bellied proboscis monkeys leap between trees and observe us shyly from behind tufts of leaves.
