Spilt Rice

The late morning breeze sent rippling waves of gold across the rice field, as a feast was being prepared in the newly erected tarp shelters on the edge of the field. This morning the Wehean Dayak village that generously welcomed us whole heartedly into their close-knit community took us to their tree nursery and after ceremoniously planting a few trees we took the dusty, back-breaking pick-up ride over to join the rest of the group in the…

Is privilege determined by the colour of your skin?

Just for speaking English and having white skin, I am capable of arriving in a city such as Balikpapan (where white people are welcomed, but are a rare sight with the exception of oil investors that mainly stick to their fancy hotels) stripped of all my money and possessions, and I being well above the poverty line by the end of the week with a stable, well paying job. How is this fair? I have seen whole families, including young children, out mining coal by hand, I have seen fishermen leaving… Continue

Days Like These

This amazing opportunity to go explore and learn in the fabled island of Borneo was offered to me over a year ago; and as it felt like this time would never come, it has now overtaken me. During the last weeks leading up to our group’s departure from the chilly Canadian coast my days abounded with questions of “are you getting excited yet?” My answer to this question was always something similar to: “yes, I can’t believe this is actually happening!” But due mainly to the pre-trip research my… Continue

The Beginning

The time has finally come. Months of talking about this trip some time off in the future have finally come down to these last few hours. I'm flying out in the morning and should be landing in Balikpapan on the 8th. I'm looking forward to sharing the experiences with everyone!

Well done video boy! I just watched Willie Smit's TED—Amazing! Devastating, but incredibly inspiring as well, and a model of re-growth which should be applied to numerous other areas.

Jesse: This sure beats sitting in a lecture hall with 400 others in stages of advancing narcopelpsy. Thanks for allowing me to observe some small part of your wonderful experience.

Check out Chimfunshi's latest newsletter. We work very closely with this organization and will be spending some time there during our 2010 Zambia Expedition.

I've attached the current Newsletter from Conservation Lower Zambezi which is an organization we work closely with in Zambia. We'll be spending about 10 days at their center and helping quite a bit with their education campaigns. It's quite an amazing place located right on the Zambezi River.CLZ_NEWS_OCT_09_FINAL.pdf
